Nanosolar's technology uses no glass (overcoming a cost barrier to its use in structures), and no silicon (overcoming another cost barrier) and is printed on an aluminium sheet. At 30-50c per watt (if they really achieve that) it could change the economics of everything, and make tackling climate change much easier. It would help tackle poverty too - with cheap reliable electricity, powering LED lights and other essential devices. Electric power becomes an option when thinking about options for appropriate technology. Maybe even electric stoves rather than wood or kerosene, if it gets cheap enough.
It must be pretty good to get $100,000,000 in funding
. Here's hoping this is the big breakthrough we need to wipe coal power stations off the map! Seems like they'll be actually producing solar cells commercially soon - then we'll see if they live up to their very high promises.
Fingers crossed.
